Featuring members of Rainbow and Blue Murder fame, Rated X have unveiled their video for “This is Who I Am.”

Comprised of lead vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple, Yngwie Malmsteen), guitarist Karl Cochran (Ace Frehley, Nuclear Assault), bassist Tony Franklin (The Firm, Whitesnake), and drummer Carmine Appice (King Kobra, Ozzy Osbourne), Rated X are one of the latest all-star collaborations to find their way onto the music scene, and currently preparing for the release of their self-titled debut album due for release on November 11 via Frontiers.

With the assistance of label president Serafino Perugino, Turner began to actively search for prominent musicians with the intention of creating classic hard rock music. “I believe we wanted to keep it a bit retro with a modern edge,” explains Turner. “The songs are classic rock, but then that’s an understatement. They are what they are; and they transformed as we went along recording. So, all in all, we are very happy to finish the record and finally able to get it out to the public. Everyone in this band is a true individual and stylist. When you put it all together, you have Rated X.”

Having previously established a relationship with Frontiers, it reportedly only took a few phone calls to have Carmine Appice aboard the project. One to use his own connections, Appice’s former Blue Murder band member Tony Franklin was next to join the Rated X lineup. After some discussion on who should serve as the band’s guitarist, the decision was ultimately made to recruit Karl Cochran, who has similarly worked with Turner on his own solo career.

The effort was mixed by veteran rock personnel Pat Regan, recognized for his work with Deep Purple, Doro, Gotthard, KISS and Mr. Big, amongst others. Production on the album was handled by in-house producer Alessandro del Vecchio, who occasionally stepped out of the sound booth to offer some keyboard arrangements, and according to Carmine Appice also assisted in the formation of several of the songs found on Rated X’s debut album.

“With [Alessandro's] help in coming up with the song ideas and working together with the band, I believe we came up with the sound from the late ’70s-’80s,” Appice says. To me, it sounds like Blue Murder with Joe Lynn Turner singing. Having Tony and myself as the rhythm section and with the heavy guitars, it gives the record a Blue Murder vibe. Then, adding Alessandro on keys gave us a bit of the Deep Purple thing. It all works together and I loved playing each song.”
