British hard rock band SMOKIN' ROADIE just missed out on the NWoBHM boom. Although the band toured hard it was all too late. After releasing the 1984 single 'Midnight' the band comprising Rue Phillips (vocals / guitar), Lee Faulkner (bass), Steve Bell (drums) changed its name to TEMPEST in 1985 and recorded a single 'Hellfire' on the Mak label. However, they chose to revert back to SMOKIN' ROADIE and toured America during 1986. Rue Phillips guested on BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward's 1988 solo album "Ward One".
Next year Phillips and Faulkner founded a new band THE NOW adding keyboard player Malcolm Bruce and drummer Kaulfi Baker. This line-up recorded an excellent "Overnight Stay" album in 1989. Being produced by Martin Smith (ex-CHARLIE, MAYDAY, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA), this record was very promising but THE NOW failed to continue and soon disbanded.
