Идея возникла из разговора с другом Шона Леннона. Другу только что исполнился 21 год, и он жаловался, что жить в его эпоху — безумие, а значит, любое другое время до его эпохи было лучше. Это вдохновило Джоэла на написание песни, которая доказывала бы, что любое время полно крайностей.
Начиная с 1949 года (года его рождения), он вёл хронику основных событий того времени, быстро перечисляя имена, места и культурные произведения".
Песня заняла первое место в Billboard Hot 100 и стала популярной на радио. По состоянию на март 2025 года в живых остались только четыре человека, упомянутые в песне: Брижит Бардо, Боб Дилан, Чабби Чекер и Бернхард Гетц.
