Lazy Racer - Lazy Racer (1979)
Artist: Lazy Racer
Album: Lazy Racer
Label: A&M Records
Catalog#: SP 4768
Release: 1979
Country:
Duration:
Essentially a studio project put together by renowned British producer Glyn Johns best known for his legendary work with The Who, Steve Miller Band and Eric Clapton. Lazy Racer released two albums on A&M that received kudos from the critics, but never sold many records probably due to them never having played a live gig. Whatever the reasons for their lack of success, Lazy Racer were unique featuring three lead vocalists. Tim Renwick, who's impressive resume includes Procol Harum, Roger Waters and Elton John among other notables, Bill Lamb who released a half way interesting album in 1983 called 'Riff Rockin' and Kelly Harland, the sole female member of the group.
Very much in the Southern California 70's sound and conjuring up memories of Starland Vocal Band's 'Late Night Radio' album and Fleetwood Mac's 'Bare Trees' period when Kelly Harland handles the vocal duties, sprinkled with a little Steely Dan instrumentally. In other words, if you are looking for power AOR, I suggest passing on this album. If you enjoy tasty rock with a jazzy, country, bluesy edge or if mid-70's Eagles are your bag, then Lazy Racer might light your fire. Yes, its ballad heavy with the closing two tracks 'Heart With Your Name On It' and 'Today More Than Ever' taking top prize in this category, but the album never really leaves the starting line in my opinion. Nothing here screams 'Great record!' and artists like Firefall and Linda Ronstadt did this type of music so much better back in the day.
I know west coast fans will dig this album as well as the bands follow-up 'Formula 2' and yes, I admit liking both records more now than I did when they first were released all those years ago, but they are not something I play very often. Your mileage may vary.
